Nick Felvus’ journey as a PR account coordinator began when he joined Weber Shandwick Australia in June 2016, after graduating from the University of Wollongong. In 12 months, he’s established himself as a core team member in the Technology and Corporate practice.
When work-time is play-time
“I love that I get to work with some brilliant technology disruptors as part of my day-to-day role. Media relations is my favourite part of my role, as I get to talk about, and play with, the latest and greatest in technology with journalists who are just as passionate about it as I am,” says Nick.
“I feel like I’ve landed where I belong in the Technology and Corporate practice. Tech is my thing and I am so enthusiastic about it – and I think this shines through in my interactions with media and influencers, my team and my clients. In my first few months, I worked with the Consumer practice and while it’s great to experience what other teams do, I feel that the tech team is where I am supposed to be.”
Supportive and collaborative environment
But it’s not just the chance to play with cool technology that brings Nick into the office every day. It’s the people.
“I live in Wollongong and have a lengthy commute each day. I’ve been offered the choice to work from home sometimes to reduce that travel commitment, but I just love coming into the office. The entire Technology and Corporate practice team is phenomenal. Everyone from the top to the bottom, across different client teams, looks out for each other. As a graduate, I’ve been given the opportunities to learn, but also entrusted with responsibility to get the job done how I see fit,” continues Nick.
Learning from team mates has been a big part of Nick’s development in his first year as an account coordinator. “My degree didn’t fully prepare me for practical elements of working in the PR agency environment. I knew the theory and how to write strategy documents, but not how to take care of the day-to-day execution of PR campaigns. That knowledge has come from everyone at Weber Shandwick being so open with their experiences and generous with sharing their time to help me learn and grow as a professional.”
